Onychogryphosis – Thickened Toenail
This is the overgrowth of the nail plate which becomes distorted, thick and claw-like. The nail becomes curved, discolored and thickened (much like a rams horn).
Onychogryphosis is often triggered by the following, or a combination of:
- Injury to the nail/nail bed,
- Poor circulation / degeneration of the vascular system,
- Thyroid disease,
- Weakened immune system (allowing fungal infection to cause damage to the nail bed),
- It is also something that is often hereditary.
Attempts to correct the condition have been successful, such as:
- Ensure your shoes aren’t cutting off circulation, or putting pressure on those toes.
- Constant friction on the nail exasperates the condition, so it’s important to file the horn formation down until it is flat.
- This is better done after a good soak in tea tree oil, bicarb, and/or colloidal silver (one of, or you can try all three).
- There are anti-fungal applications, combined with the heat from a foot bath, they will help your immune cells fight off any fungal or bacterial infections in the toes skin and nail, while softening the nail for trimming/sculpting.
- Clean out any soft pulp material from under the nail.
- Alternatively, one can opt for surgical nail removal.
